Russian gymnast investigated for wearing pro-war symbol on the platform next to a Ukranian

Ivan Kuliak, a Russian gymnast, is being examined after standing next to a Ukrainian competitor on the podium in Qatar on Saturday with a national war symbol on his leotard.

Kuliak's "shocking behavior" at the Apparatus World Cup in Doha prompted the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) to begin disciplinary procedures against him.

Kuliak took bronze in the parallel bars final and stood next to gold medalist Illia Kovtun of Ukraine, wearing a letter 'Z' taped to his chest.

With Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the letter Z has become a symbol, and it has been seen painted on military vehicles and worn by pro-war politicians in Russia.

The FIG sanctioned Russia and Belarus as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, therefore this weekend was the last chance for Russian and Belarusian gymnasts to compete.

Athletes, officials, and judges from Russia and Belarus will be barred from competing in FIG or FIG-sanctioned events beginning Monday.
