Even though the game between Argentina and Australia was tricky, more like a banana peel, yet Lionel Messi still broke Diego Maradona’s record by scoring his ninth goal at a World Cup on Saturday night.
The game was so significant for him because it was on his 1,000th career appearance as the 35-year-old netted his 789th goal, which is also Messi’s first in the knockout stages of the World Cup taking him one clear of Maradona and one behind Gabriel Batistuta.
Though, Messi had scored at three separate World Cups before this year's World Cup on in Qatar, but has never scored in the knockout stages. With the goal, he has finally broken his duck.
