The world football leading body, FIFA led by Giaanni Infantino is introducing new format for the world club cup as there will be a new and expanded tournament which will now feature 32 of the best teams in the world as against the current format which contains only seven teams, comprising of each federation’s premier tournament winners. Chelsea of England are the current holders, having beaten Brazilian side Palmeiras in February’s final.
Some people are already arguing that this new innovation is meant to rival the ever growing and glamorous UEFA champions league. Nevertheless, The expansion was originally planned for 2021 in China before the COVID-19 pandemic and will now commence from 2025 onwards, even as there are plans for a Club World Cup to be introduced into the women’s game too.
