Boxer's death at Delta 2022: Another preventable death too many

Once again for the upteenth time, tragedy struck at the National Sport Festival with the death of Imo State boxer, Chukwuemeka Ibanugo which the Chairman Media and Publicity for Delta State, Mr Charles Aniagwu has described as unfortunate because the Nation has lost an athlete representing Imo State who by records was 25 years and weighing 81kg.

Aniagwu who stated this on Wednesday evening at the Media Centre in Asaba while briefing journalists explained that the Delta State Government provided more than enough human and medical facilities that could arrest such unfortunate incident because you

have all seen the ambulances and facilities in all our game centres.

We have ringside medical personnel that usually checks whether you are fit for a fight a day before any fight or even on fight day, they will also examine all the boxers and check his blood pressure if it's not normal.

Even the late boxer was asked to leave initially due to his high blood pressure only to return later when they discovered that his BP was normal but was asked to  come again for another test and by the time the game started, they discovered that he had a little breathing from the nose. The medics wanted to stop the fight but of course he was desirous of victory because if he stopped it at that time, his opponent had won".

His backroom staff and  Coach wanted victory but not knowing  other development occurred internally. By the time he was rushed to Asaba Hospital and at that time, he passed on. We are so pained and deep brief as organizers because we did all what we could. The boxer wanted to demonstrate his patriotism and died which is not  for Imo State alone but for the entire nation (Nigeria).
