Blunt Assessment: Tuchel Slams Southgate's England, Citing Five Key Failings

Updated: Mar 21

The assessment of England's Euro 2024 campaign under Gareth Southgate brought out a scathing remark from Thoma Tuchel despite the Three Lions reaching their second consecutive Euros final in Germany before losing to Spain.

Gareth Southgate's men struggled and scraped past Serbia in the group stages,  before drawing with Denmark and Slovenia. It was sheer luck in the knockout stage with wins over Slovakia, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Such that Some England fans started turning on Southgate during the tournament.

Thomas Tuchel has now suggested that he understands why they were frustrated bottled up claiming the team lacked identity and no excitement in their displays.

When prodded if England had a clear playing style at the Euros, the former Chelsea, PSG and Bayern Man said an emphatic no, not last summer because the team lacked identity, the clarity, the rhythm, the repetition of patterns. The freedom of players, the expression of players and the hunger. They were more afraid than having the excitement and hunger to win the championship as England relied on moments of brilliance from players to get through after key players including captain Harry Kane and Phil Foden failed to spark into life.

Ahead of the World Cup next year, Thomas Tuchel wants fans to be excited when watching England play and leave the opponents to be worried about his side.
